History of Beautiful Forks Area - "The First Amish / Mennonite Settlers"
Amish/Mennonite
History Forks Area
In 1840, four Amish men from Somerset County, Pennsylvania (near Johnstown,
PA) decided to scout out the Midwest for future settlement. They went to
Pittsburg, Penn. and charted a boat down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi
River to Burlington, Iowa. From there they traveled on foot through Henry,
Washington, and Johnson Counties in Iowa.
They also wanted to see Indiana before returning home, so on their return
trip, they crossed the Mississippi River and the state of Illinois and came
to the small town of Chicago. By boat, they crossed Lake Michigan and came
down the St. Joseph River and from there they came to the Elkhart River.
Traveling again on foot they spotted the beautiful valley of the FORKS
- where two creeks meet; the Emma Creek and the Eden Creek then forming the
Little Elkhart River.
